Prayer a Priority

I quickly learned that prayer was the most important part of our walk with God. It is our communication with our Creator where we learn what He desires for us and for our lives.

"Making Prayer a Priority" by Sherri Hemus.

My oldest son was three years old when I was baptised and filled with the Holy Ghost. I was learning about Jesus and prayer while I was trying to teach him and his two siblings that followed. I remember a man from the church we attended came to our home to speak with my husband. I was on the sidewalk with my three-year-old when my son fell and scraped his knee. That man asked if he could pray for my son’s knee. I had never seen anyone lay their hand on someone, especially a three-year-old, and pray. My son accepted it freely and felt better after the prayer. That is when I began to dig deeper into the Bible to learn more about prayer.

I quickly learned that prayer was the most important part of our walk with God. It is our communication with our Creator where we learn what He desires for us and for our lives. Through prayer we also learn to open our heart to Him so He can mold and change it.

I began to pray with my children before school, before bed, when an obstacle was in their path, when they had concerns over something, when someone was unkind to them or bullying them, and even over things that we, as adults, would consider trivial. I wanted them to know that God cared about the small things in their lives also.

"Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeders them. Are ye not much better than they?” (Matthew 6:26)

·        Genesis 20 — When Abraham prayed, God healed Abimelech.

·        Numbers 11 — When Moses prayed, the fire of the Lord was quenched.

·        I Samuel 1 — When Hannah prayed, she received a miracle.

·        Daniel 6 — When Daniel prayed, he was delivered from the lions den.

·        Ezra 10 — When Ezra prayed, revival came.

When young women with small children come to me and say how crazy their life currently is with little ones, I show them that they need to start praying with them now, while they are small, even if they don’t seem to understand. Not a long, theological prayer but a prayer in their language, through their eyes. Although they may not think their children are getting anything out of it, they definitely are absorbing more than we realize.

And as your children grow, your prayers change and grow. Mothers, prayer with and over your children is one of the most important acts you can do for them. Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go: And when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
